WHAT IS JAZZ JACKRABBIT?

Jazz Jackrabbit is a 2D Platformer game developed by Epic MegaGames (nowadays known as Epic Games, the Fortnite guys). The games in the franchise are:

  • Jazz Jackrabbit (1994, MS-DOS)
  • Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (1998, PC)
  • Jazz Jackrabbit 3 (Unreleased, PS1 and PC)
  • Jazz Jackrabbit (2002, GBA, meant to be a reboot for the franchise but flopped horribly)

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The game follows Jazz Jackrabbit, a bunny that is the protagonist of the series, as he attempts to defeat Devan Shell throughout the games. Jazz is assisted by his siblings, Spaz (incredibly well-aged name) and Lori (in the second game in the Secret Files DLC).

In the first game, Jazz has to rescue the princess of planet Carrotus, Eva Earlong, after she was kidnapped by Devan Shell.

In the second game, you can play as either one of the siblings to defeat Devan once more as he steals Eva's wedding ring.

In the third, unreleased game, you have to rescue the children of Jazz and Eva, as Devan is set on causing trouble yet again. As far as we know, you could only play as Jazz.

In the most recent entry of the series (the GBA game), you play as Jazz as he wants to defeat Dark Shell, the leader of an evil intergalactic empire. The reboot has changed the plot so it is more Star Wars-like, but it erased what made the series special in the first place.

I think that you can tell the second game is my favorite...

IS IT FUN?

For platformers of that time, or even as platformers in general, the games are fun to play and are not boring at all. They also have really good visuals and fun designs (especially for the rabbit siblings)! The game mechanics related to the available guns are also interesting (you use a ray gun to hit enemies, you can unlock more types of weapons as the game goes on).

As an added bonus brought by their age, they are very small downloads and they will run on any modern system, each game (except the third since it's not released) not passing the 30 MB mark!

WHERE TO GET IT?

You could buy it off GOG but there are many alternative ways of doing so, good luck :P
